Our advice is to stick to what suits you for the most natural-looking results. To select a hair colour that will best suit your skin tone see ‘Find the Best Colour for Your Skin Tone’. Otherwise, when picking a hair colour keep these useful tips in mind:

  • When trying a new hair colour, look for a shade that will bring out the colour of your eyes and warm up your skin tone – if in doubt trying a wig on will give you an idea of what works and what doesn’t, before committing to a new colour
  • Don’t go more than two shades lighter or darker than your natural colour, the results will be more believable
  • When choosing between two shades, choose the lighter colour – it is much easier to go darker than lighter again!
  • It can also be difficult to decide between permanent, semi-permanent and non-permanent. Know what format is the most appropriate for your hair and then select your colour. To learn about the differences between these types of dye see ‘What Is the Difference between Permanent, Semi-Permanent and Temporary Hair Colour?’
